With winter on our doorstep, slowly making an unwelcome appearance into our lives once again, we gradually stop venturing outside as much, choosing to curl up inside, avoiding at all costs, that initial smack of cold that winter likes to give us the moment we open the front door. Sometimes, no matter how much we turn the heating up, frost still builds up on the windows, and the cool air creeps inside without an invitation. The best remedy for this is undoubtedly warm and soft textiles, in the forms of blankets, rugs, linens, and pillows, that help warm our bodies and our minds, and give a warm visual feeling to the interior.
Not all fabrics are suited for colder days. Winter textiles need to be soft to touch, as we will be holding them close to our bodies! They must also be able to retain heat; wool being the perfect example. After all, this is how sheep stay warm during the cool months in the highlands! Colour also plays a large factor, whether we are conscious of it or not. Soft whites, tones of beige, and pale colour tones are naturally inviting to touch and wrap up in. Winter textiles also call for intricate patterns, and different weaving methods, for added texture and comfort...
Patchwork is a form of needlework that involves sewing together smaller pieces of fabric, to come together in one larger design. Patchwork quilts, for example, have a special presence about them, one that is hard to define or explain. Either way, if the cat thinks they are comfortable, then there must be something snug about them.
If the cat thinks they’re soft…
It was all slightly twisted last weekend, but in a good way…Halloween was the hottest day since records began and Selvedge Winter Fair was on at Chelsea Old Town Hall. Thankfully there was a cool breeze in the ante room, where Quilts by Lisa Watson was situated, with plenty of traffic to and from the refreshments. (Gin o’clock was particularly appreciated on Friday evening.) Quite a delicious mix too of exhibitors too http://www.selvedge.org/events/fairs/exhibitors/?event-id=296

Selvedge Winter Fair in London
Chelsea Old Town Hall
Selvedge is launching the festive season with our fifth seasonal fair at Chelsea Old Town Hall. Join us on the 31st October and 1st November 2014 and get Christmas wrapped up early.
As ever we will select over 100 designers and small companies to bring you vintage haberdashery, antique textiles and many other textile treats. Our event takes place over two days with an evening reception so visitors will have plenty of time to browse a truly tempting range of textiles in a friendly and inspiring atmosphere. You’ll be the envy of your friends when you pick up presents and decorations with plenty of time to spare.
There is no better opportunity to buy special, handcrafted textiles and enjoy meeting and talking to the talented people that create them. And with so much to see you might have to stop for sustenance so organic savouries, delicious cakes and fine teas and coffees will be available in our pop-up café.
Our central location offers the convenience of easy transport links and a host of textile related venues to visit, including the V&A museum, making this the ideal opportunity for a weekend in London. Whether you are searching for gifts and decorations or hoping to find the perfect garment or accessory (perhaps you are looking for the materials to make your own?) you will find the finest textiles and inspiration at the Selvedge Winter Fair.

In the last week I have had the pleasure to receive two lots of quality quilt pics. At the brilliant Best of Britannia at the beginning of October http://bestofbritannia.com/ there was an opportunity to utilise the skills of photographer Annalisa Bruno http://www.annalisabruno.com/ to have some professional shots taken of our Quilts by Lisa Watson stand.
And in anticipation for the forthcoming Home Is In The North Christmas Spectacular on Saturday 15th November at Halle St Peter’s http://www.eventsbythesocialbutterfly.com/ there was a homely photo shoot Mancunian style last week.

I had the best time at BoB14 last week held for the third year in the iconic Farmiloe Building in EC1M, a stone’s throw from Smithfield Market! The combination of quality British goods and a unique space with excellent catering as well as lots of live music just made the event fizz throughout the three days.
Best day for Quilts by Lisa Watson was Saturday 4th as The Farmiloe was just so busy and lively. I had lots of great conversations with visitors and I really appreciated all the quilt compliments. Thank you to my new customers and hello to all my new twitter buddies. Such a shame The Farmiloe is being turned into office space and access to this iconic building will now be restricted. The challenge now for the BoB team is to find an equally impressive venue and line-up for next years event. Watch this space! http://bestofbritannia.com/
